Ozone Air Purifiers
What is an ozone air purifier? An ozone generator
produces ozone gas and companies are selling these ozone generators
as air cleaners. These companies are making claims that
these ozone air purifiers are safe and effective in controlling
indoor air pollution. And some companies even go as far as
stating that federal agencies approve ozone generators.
That is
false, the EPA reports that NO
federal agency has approved ozone generators for use
in occupied spaces and indeed, ozone can actually
cause health problems at high concentrations.
Ozone air purifiers also do not remove dust and pollen
from the air, which are the main causes
of allergies. There are some ozone air
purifiers that have an “ion generator”
in the unit. What this does is disperse negatively charged ions which attach
to particles in the air. These particles then attach to
surfaces such as walls or furniture. Scientific experiments
have shown that ionizers are less effective in removing
pollen, fungal spores, tobacco smoke, or dust particles
than other methods of air cleaning such as high efficiency
particle filters or electrostatic precipitators.
Also,
health agencies have evidence that ozone
air purifiers do not effectively
remove viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological contaminants.
