Please read our quick note on CADR – before you buy any air purifier.
Regardless of the recommended room size that a manufacturer may print in its product specifications, you need to look instead for the CADR value, which is the Clean Air Delivery Rate, essentially how much clean, purified (i.e. without particles) air is given to the room. The CADR value is the only universal measurement of the actual purifying capabilities of the unit, enabling you to compare air purifiers across different models and brands. This is extremely useful for comparison shopping in order to get the best deal possible. Roughly, the CADR value is equal to the room area in square feet divided by 1.5. For example, if your room is 300 square feet, you require an air purifier of at least 200 CADR. Thus, you can see how this simple formula – CADR = area in sq. ft. / 1.5 – is extremely useful to calculate your air purifier requirements, in addition to comparison shopping. If you buy an air purifier with a CADR too high, it will cost a lot more, and since it’s too big for your room, it will of course purify it but you will have wasted money as you could have bought a smaller one. Moreover, your electricity bills will always be higher due to the increased power usage of higher CADR units. Therefore, you should ideally get the air purifier whose CADR is equal to or slightly greater than by a value as small as possible, and whose price:CADR ratio is low compared to air purifiers of comparable capacity and average customer review.
